The maritime transportation industry, as the backbone of the economy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, plays a pivotal role in developing international trade and strengthening global communications. Given the challenges posed by economic sanctions and the declining trend in the performance indicators of this industry, the need for strategic review is more than ever apparent. This research, using the Strategic Position and Action Assessment (SPACE) method and the Friedman test, has formulated a macro-level strategy for the Iranian maritime transportation industry and examined the strategic route from the Strait of Hormuz to Gwadar Port as a case study. Key internal (competitive advantage and financial stability) and external (environmental stability and industry attractiveness) factors were assessed through questionnaires and interviews with experts, researchers and business activists, and the results were categorized into four strategies: aggressive, competitive, conservative and defensive. The findings show that the current position of the Iranian shipping industry in the international arena is defensive. Therefore, policymaking should focus on strengthening financial stability, reducing costs, improving productivity, improving internal process management and formulating supportive laws. This study aims to contribute to the sustainable development of the maritime transport industry and to enhance the position of this industry in the national and regional economy.
